God bless the Philadelphia police officers who were injured, those who put their lives in danger and those who were trapped inside the house for over 4-hours while the police were fired on.
The suspect, 36-year old Maurice Hill has a history of firearm convictions, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and other violent crimes. He has over a dozen arrests and has been in and out of jail since the early 2000’s. He opened fire on police officers when they arrived at the home to serve a narcotics warrant. The officers were inside the house when they were fired on. All but two officers were able to escape. Two officers from the Narcotics Strike Force were trapped in the house for over 4-hours.
We know the incident will be politicized today. Yesterday while the shooting was still going on and while two officers were still trapped in the house where the suspect was firing on police, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney was focused on the gun not the safety of officers saying “I’m a little angry about someone having all that weaponry and all that firepower”. While New Jersey Governor Murphy has yet to comment I fully expect him to use this incident to justify more overreaching gun legislation in New Jersey. I am confident that Mayor Kenney and Governor Murphy will not be the only Democratic politicians politicizing the shooting of 6-police officers.
This was an act of criminal violence by a suspect with a long criminal history who was in a home where a narcotics warrant was being served. I am confident that when the details are released we will learn that Hill acquired his firearms illegally. Someone with Hill’s criminal background would not have been able to legally obtain firearms.
New Jersey currently has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country and Governor Murphy keeps signing new legislation. Murphy has vowed to make New Jersey the national leader in gun control. New Jersey law puts an undue burden on the ownership, transportation and possession of legally purchased firearms. New Jersey’s Constitution has no provisions relating to keeping or bearing of arms and New Jersey courts have upheld gun laws that were challenged on Second Amendment grounds. It will be interesting to see how Judges appointed by President Trump rule in future cases.
Up until 2012 the citizens of Venezuela were allowed to keep and bear arms. In 2012 the Socialist government of Hugo Chavez enacted the “Control of Arms, Munitions and Disarmament Law”. The government made it clear that the purpose was to “disarm all citizens”. The law resulted in 12,500 guns being confiscated in Venezuela by force. When Nicolas Maduro took power in Venezuela he sent government troops into the streets to crush opposition to his regime. The disarmed citizens had no defense.
None of New Jersey’s restrictive gun laws saved the life of John Bertram who was shot and killed while working an overnight shift at an Edison gas station in December of 2018. Criminals by definition do not obey the law including gun laws. No matter how many gun control laws we have on the books they have not stopped criminals from obtaining illegal firearms or committing crimes. Gun control laws only apply to law abiding citizens who purchase firearms legally making them potential felons for exercising their Second Amendment rights.
While we can expect to see Democratic politicians politicize what happened in Philadelphia yesterday to push their gun control agenda remember this was an act of criminal violence from an individual with a long criminal record who we can assume did not legally purchase his firearm. Gun control laws would have done nothing to stop Maurice Hill from firing on Officers serving a narcotics warrant in Philadelphia yesterday and will do nothing to stop criminals from obtaining firearms anywhere in America. Restrictive gun laws will only serve to restrict law abiding citizens from protecting their families.
