Wikipedia defines media bias as the media systematically skewing reporting in a way that crosses standards of professional journalism. Have we seen worse examples of media bias towards a President in our lifetimes then the coverage of President Trump? That coverage has continued in the past 24-hours as President Trump acted like a strong leader should and made a (temporary) deal so 800,000 federal workers could get their paychecks.
Wikipedia goes on to say that many critics of the media say liberal bias exists within a wide variety of media and especially within the mainstream media including CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, Newsweek and the New York Times. Political Scientists Robert Litcher, Stanley Rothman and Linda Lichter conducted study on liberal media bias in America and co-authored a book The Media Elite in 1986. They surveyed journalists at national media outlets and found that the large majority of journalists were Democratic voters whose attitudes were well to the left of the general public on a variety of topics. The authors concluded that journalists’ coverage of controversial issues reflected their own attitudes and that the predominance of political liberals in newsrooms pushed news coverage in a liberal direction.
Jim A. Kuypers of Virginia Tech investigated the issue of media bias in the 2002 book Press Bias and Politics. In this study of 116 mainstream U.S. papers, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, Kuypers stated that the mainstream press in America favor liberal viewpoints.
A 2005 study by political scientists Tim Groseclose of UCLA and Jeff Milyo of the University of Missouri at Columbia attempted to quantify bias among news outlets using statistical models and found a liberal bias. The authors wrote that “all of the news outlets we examine[d], except Fox News’s Special Report and the Washington Times received scores to the left of the average member of Congress”.
A 2014 Gallup poll found that a plurality of Americans believe the media is biased to favor liberal politics. According to the poll 44% of Americans feel that news media are “too liberal”. Gallup released the results of a poll with a similar question with it finding that the majority of Americans view the news media favoring a particular political party with 64% believing it favored the Democratic Party.
A 2008 joint study by the Joan Shorenstein Center on Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University and the Project for Excellence in Journalism found that viewers believe a liberal media bias can be found in television news on networks such as CNN.
So it is no surprise that when President Trump and congressional leadership reached a short term deal to reopen the government for three weeks on Friday the liberal media called it a failure on the part of the President.
According to CNN Pelosi “broke Trump” and “brought him to his knees”. They claimed that Trump caved on the shutdown and asked if they had ever been a worse day for Trump saying “There’s no spinning what happened in Washington on Friday: Donald Trump caved to Nancy Pelosi”. The network went on to say that Pelosi “out-Trumped Trump”
MSNBC claimed that the President caved on the shut down.
MSNBC also claimed that Trump “held government workers hostage for a month and walked about with nothing”. In this piece MSNBC says the President “undermined the brand he’s tried to build as an indefatigable fighter, a master strategist and the world’s savviest deal-maker. On all those counts, he lost — and lost big — Friday”. It went on to say “Usually, the loser in Washington gets some sort of policy fig leaf to cover up for the fact that they were defeated. Trump got nada” and “He did gain one more thing he probably didn’t want — a lesson in messing with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi”.
The New York times proclaims “Trump backs down”, “For a president consumed with winning a stinging defeat” and asks “Was Trump’s shutdown a cruel joke?” The paper continued “President Trump famously declared that in his administration the nation would become tired of all the winning. So on Friday he tried a little losing”. Even worse the New York Times Editorial Board wrote “What a debacle President Trump’s shutdown proved to be — what a toddler’s pageant of foot-stomping and incompetence, of vainglory and self-defeat. Mr. Trump tormented public servants and citizens and wounded the country, and, in conceding on Friday after holding the government hostage for 35 days, could claim to have achieved nothing”.
Politico says “All for nothing – Trump’s wall retreat bewilders allies” and “She’s not one to bluff; How Pelosi won the shutdown battle.
Not to be outdone the Huffington Post calls Trump “President Pointless” and says he was “Schooled by the speaker”. Huffington Post goes on to say “In case it wasn’t clear what actually happened Friday when President Donald Trump announced he would sign a bill to reopen the government through Feb. 15, we’ve got you covered: the president caved. And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won. The man who prides himself on his toughness, his virility and his ability to be one step ahead of everyone was outmaneuvered by a liberal woman from San Francisco who mocked his manhood.
This unfortunately is what we have masquerading as news media in America. The media cannot simply report the news but has to put their biased radical left opinions into every story. What happened to accuracy and fairness in reporting the news? CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, Politico and many others have become nothing more than the 2000’s version of supermarket tabloid.
Here is the truth that none of these media outlets reported without their spin. President Trump signed a short term spending bill on Friday that will temporarily reopen the government, allow 800,000 government workers to get their paychecks and give both sides the opportunity to negotiate without further peril to the American people. Neither side won or lost because unfortunately for the American people the battle is not over.
“I will sign a bill to open our government for three weeks” the President said on Friday “we have reached a deal to end the shutdown”. The President explained that “a bipartisan conference committee of House and Senate lawmakers and leaders will work to put together a homeland security package for me shortly to sign it law”. “Over the net 21 days I expect that both Democrats and Republicans will operate in good faith” the President said.
If you haven’t seen the President’s address to the nation please watch it below.
The media knows what the facts are but unfortunately the facts do not fit into a narrative that benefits Democrats. The fact is that Congressional Democratic leaders, former Secretary of State Clinton and even former Presidents Clinton and Obama agreed with the crisis at our southern border. It was not until then candidate Trump made border security and the wall a campaign issue that Democrats suddenly changed their minds. It was the Democratic leadership in Congress, desperate to deny the President a win on a key campaign issue, who caused the government shutdown.
