Psychology Today speculates that Trump Derangement Syndrome may be a legitimate mental condition. In one of the worst cases of Trump Derangement Syndrome we’ve seen Democratic Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez along with Democratic Congressmen Albio Sires and Donald Payne Jr held a news conference at Newark Liberty International Airport today. In an apparent attempt to sway opinion before President Trump’s address tonight Menendez told the press that the President’s address should come with a warning to viewers that “the comments you are about to hear are not based on fact and are likely to include misinformation, blatant lies and fear mongering”. It seems to me that it is Menendez, Booker, Sires and Payne who are pandering to the uninformed with misinformation, blatant lies and fear mongering.
Menendez called it “Trump’s shutdown” and continued “Across the federal government these 800,000 workers and families are treated like pawns in President Trump’s pointless and cruel shutdown. The longer this shutdown goes on the more damage it does to the economy and the average American”. Menendez said “We have long known that something is badly broken inside the President that makes him incapable of caring for anyone other than himself and “It is clear that President Trump does not see our federal employees as real people with families to feed, bills to pay and real work to do. To trump these hard working Americans are just political paws, bargaining chips, collateral damage in his egotistical quest to fulfill a ludicrous campaign promise” Menendez called the 800,000 federal workers affected by the shutdown “hostages” and said that President Trump is “not negotiating in good faith”. He said the shutdown was “avoidable and can quickly come to an end”.
Menendez is the wrong person to talk to any of us about right and wrong as he was indicted three years ago on charges of bribery, fraud and lying to federal prosecutors about his involvement in an illegal immigration fraud . While a jury deadlocked and a Judge declared a mistrial the Senate Ethics Committee formally reprimanded Menendez saying he broke federal law “You failed to publicly disclose certain gifts as required by Senate Rule and federal law”. The letter from the Senate Ethics Committee continued “Additionally, while accepting these gifts you used your position as a member of the Senate to advance Dr. Melgen’s personal and business interests”.
Booker called the shutdown “unnecessary” and said it is making our country “less safe, less secure and hurting hurting hundreds of thousands of families, thousands of small businesses, hurting New Jersey and hurting every state in this nation” Booker continued “The callous political games President Trump is willing to play at the expense of American workers is simply shameful”. He said the “Trump shutdown” was to “extort funds for this unnecessary and nonsensical border wall” calling it a “divisive border wall” Booker stressed “this is not acceptable” and is an “urgent crisis” “This President repeatedly lies to the American people” Booker said saying that President Trump “over-exaggerates and lies about the threats from abroad”. “There is a moral urgency to stopping this shutdown”.
Sires said that President Trump is continuing the shutdown because “he has never felt any type of pain”, has been “a wealthy individual all his life” and is likely to “lie on national television”.
Payne said “800,000 Americas are in a lurch” and that “5,000 New Jerseyans don’t know when they will get paid”. Payne continued “It is unconscionable that the Commander in Chief would put 800,000 Americans in that position”. Payne said “the Senate and the President could end it today” and “Let’s restore sanity to our government and end the Trump shutdown madness.”
As I pointed out yesterday Democrats are being hypocritical in talking about their shutdown. If they were being honest they’d call this the Schumer / Pelosi shutdown.
I agree with much of what Booker, Menendez, Sires and Payne said today. It is true that 800,000 federal workers, their families and countless Americans across the country that depend on the federal government are being treated like pawns in a political game. Where I disagree is it is the Congressional Democrats, not President Trump who are responsible.
While President Trump remains firm on his insistence of $5.6 billion for a wall along our southern border he has been willing to negotiate on other issues. Congressional Democrats, many of which (including President Obama) supported border security (including a wall) until President Trump used the issue in his campaign refuse to negotiate any path to ending the shutdown that includes a border wall. The President has said repeatedly that he doesn’t want to ban immigration into the U.S. but wants to make sure immigrants come legally. Trump has even said he’d negotiate a path to citizenship for those so called dreamers who are already here. President Trump has also agreed to a steel wall rather than a concrete wall as a concession to Democrats. Trump said “They don’t like concrete so we’ll give them steel”. Democrats are unwilling to negotiate in an apparent attempt to deny the President a win on a key issue he he campaigned on. Trump has insisted he wants to make a deal but Democrats refuse to make any deal that includes funding a border wall.
Border security continues to be one of the most important issues facing America. President Trump has said that illegal immigration costs the United States $250 billion per year. The Pew Research Center found that of the 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. in 2016 an estimated 5.6 million were from Mexico. In a recent 5 day ICE operation in New Jersey ICE officers arrested 105 illegal immigrants. Of those about 80% of them had prior criminal convictions and several are wanted by Interpol for crimes in their home countries. The criminal records of those arrested include international warrants and convictions for indecent acts by compulsion causing bodily injury, distribution of psychotropic drugs, fraud, forcible touching of a child, distribution of narcotics, prostitution with a child, endangering the welfare of a child, distribution of narcotics on school grounds, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession and distribution of narcotics, bank fraud, criminal sexual contact, conspiracy to commit robbery and suspicion of being a member of a street gang. ICE continues to work hard to protect America but a barrier at our southern border remains critical to American safety and security.
In talking about the government shutdown Congressional Democrats seem to forget that they shut down the government from October 1st to October 17th 2013 over maintaining funding for the failed Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). An interim appropriations bill was signed and the government resumed operations on October 17th. During that shutdown approximately 800,000 federal employees were furloughed and another 1.3 million were required to report to work not knowing when they would get paid. The 2013 shutdown was the 3rd longest in U.S. history.
As I said previously it’s time for Congressional Democrats to stop pandering to the far left wing of the Democratic party, put the safety and security of the American people first and work with President Trump on a solution that will secure our borders and reopen the government.
It’s clear that Congressional Democrats are suffering from a mental health crisis. Won’t you please help? In the upcoming elections please vote Democrats out of office so they can get the help they need to recover from Trump Derangement Syndrome.
