President Trump met with Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer today in what was a heated discourse. The meeting took place after the President sent out a Tweet this morning stating that he’d have the military build the remaining sections of the border wall if Congress didn’t approve funding. With cameras broadcasting live from the Oval Office Trump insisted he’s willing to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t approve funding for the border wall. “If we don’t have border security we’ll shut down the government” Trump said. The meeting left questions as to if the two sides will come to an agreement and Congress will pass a spending bill to keep the government running before the December 21st deadline. The President is asking for $5 billion for border security.
Apparently Pelosi and Schumer do not support transparency in government. As the discussion began and started to get heated Pelosi said, “I don’t think you should have a debate in front of the press”. Schumer said “Let’s debate in private”. I believe that if Pelosi and Schumer were acting in the best interest of the American people rather than the best interest of the Democrat Party they would have been happy to have the American people witness the discussion.
After the meeting the White House put out a statement saying “Major disagreement remains on the issue of border security and transparency,” despite their “constructive dialogue.”
Schumer and Pelosi put out a statement saying “We gave the president two options that would keep the government open. It’s his choice to accept one of those options or shut the government down”.
Pelosi had previously stated that she will not agree to any monies for a border wall and faces heat from Democrats if she agrees to funding as she hopes to be the next House Speaker. Most of the Democrats she needs votes from oppose border wall funding. Meanwhile Pelosi and Schumer accused Trump of wanting to shut down the government while they remain unwilling to negotiate with the President on border security funding.
There were approximately 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. in 2016. We cannot allow open borders and we cannot allow immigrants to come to America without vetting. In Europe with it’s open borders the years 2014 to 2016 saw more than 20 fatal terrorist attacks – more than all previous years combined and the highest rate of attack plots per year. In 2017 a total of 62 people were killed in ten completed terror attacks in Europe and an additional 33 plots were thwarted. President Trump takes the safety and security of our nation seriously. Democrats in Congress need to start focusing on the safety and security of our nation instead of partisan politics.
In a recent 5 day ICE operation in New Jersey ICE officers arrested 105 illegal immigrants. Of those about 80% of them had prior criminal convictions and several are wanted by Interpol for crimes in their home countries. The criminal records of those arrested include international warrants and convictions for indecent acts by compulsion causing bodily injury, distribution of psychotropic drugs, fraud, forcible touching of a child, distribution of narcotics, prostitution with a child, endangering the welfare of a child, distribution of narcotics on school grounds, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, possession and distribution of narcotics, bank fraud, criminal sexual contact, conspiracy to commit robbery and suspicion of being a member of a street gang.
President Trump has said that illegal immigration costs the United States $250 billion per year.
The Congressional Budget Office reported in 2007 that “the tax revenues that unauthorized immigrants generate for state and local governments do not offset the total cost of services provided to them”. A 2013 Heritage Foundation study found that as of 2010 the “average unlawful immigrant household” had a net deficit (benefits received minus taxes paid) of $14,387 per household.
There were an estimated 8 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce in 2016. We know that illegal immigrants cannot work legally and pay taxes in the U.S. Illegal immigrants will either turn to crime, collect welfare benefits or work “off the books” causing their employer to also break the law by employing them and not paying taxes. Those illegal immigrants who do work “off the books” push wages down for unskilled workers since they are often willing to work for less and cause competition for unskilled jobs.
Due to the 1986 Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (42 U.S.C. § 1395dd) most hospitals cannot refuse treatment for an emergency because of legal status. Almost $190 million or 25% of uncollected hospital bills in Southwest border hospitals resulted from emergency medical treatment provided to illegal immigrants.
According to the Pew Research Center of the 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. in 2016 an estimated 5.6 million were from Mexico. About half. For reasons of safety and economics border security at our southern border is one of the most important issues facing our nation. There are legal means for immigrants to enter the U.S. that allow immigrants to be vetted and allow them to legally work and pay taxes in the U.S. Democrats opposition to President Trumps border wall and ICE agents enforcing federal immigration law is counterproductive and not in the best interest of the American people. It’s time for Democrats to put partisan politics aside and make border security and the building of a border wall a priority.
