ICE likely to increase immigration raids in New Jersey

ICE has responded to the new sanctuary rules by New Jersey’s Attorney General with a threat of more immigration raids in New Jersey.  ICE says it has no choice but to conduct more arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites in New Jersey.  A representative of the ICE office in Newark told NBC News that ICE raids will “likely increase” as a result of the directive.  “The probability is that at-large arrests and worksite enforcement operations, which already exist, will likely increase due to the fact that ICE will no longer have the cooperation of the jails related to immigration enforcement,” ICE spokesman Emilio Dabul added “the highest priority is public safety and enforcing immigration laws, we must pursue that to the best extent possible, which will likely involve more at-large arrests and worksite enforcement operations.”  Attorney General Grewal has not responded.

ICE has said that “sanctuary policies” offer a false sense of protection to illegal criminal immigrants and will have “disastrous consequences” using the example of Luis Perez who was released from the Middlesex County Jail after a year in custody despite an ICE  detainer and later charged with killing three people.  New Jersey has one of the largest undocumented immigrant populations in the United States.  A 2014 Pew Research study estimated that 500,000 illegal immigrants were living in New Jersey.

Grewal’s Immigrant Trust Directive includes new rules including New Jersey’s law enforcement officers no longer being allowed to turn illegal immigrants over to federal law enforcement officers for deportation or ask the immigration status of any individual.  ICE is not to be provided access to state or local law enforcement resources including equipment, office space, databases or property.

I’ve asked the question before.  Why is it that New Jersey’s Governor and top state law enforcement officer do not feel the need to comply with federal law?   Why are Murphy and Grewal not being challenged?  In 2017 then Lt. Governor and Republican candidate for Governor Kim Guadagno was criticized for saying that Murphy’s stance on immigration disqualifies him from being Governor.   She was absolutely right.  For some reason Republicans in New Jersey don’t get mad enough to show up at the polls.

The following on-air conversation took place on November 30th between NJ 101.5 radio morning host Bill Spadea, Matt Rooney of the Save Jersey blog and later Kim Guadagno.  It’s worth spending a few minutes listening to.  It seems to me that if anything Grewal’s directive has put illegal immigrants in more danger of being arrested and deported.

I keep asking the question but I don’t get an answer.  Are you mad yet New Jersey?
